Imagine a 20th century country that produced a natural resource ( say timber ) using what the modern world would call slave labour ( let’s call it a gulag ). This country was willing to export the product at a price which was very attractive, and below the world price, whatever that means in this context.
The question I want to ask is should sanctions be applied to stop the exports from this rogue country or should the citizens be free to make up their own minds if they want to buy products that contain cheap lumber.
I would support freedom, but I’m not that articulate at explaining why it’s the right approach. I would be grateful if the trade experts at the IEA could articulate it better.
