    One feature of closed countries is that their published statistics are extremely doubtful.

    I doubt that Cuba cares greatly if its life expectancy and child mortality figures are remotely correct. Maybe they are, maybe they aren’t. But with their health statistics being pretty much what they hand their hat on, in terms of the glories of the revolution, I’d put money on them having been “improved”.
