In a debate column for City AM, IEA Head of Public Affairs, Emma Revell, argued that individuals should not have to provide social media companies with ID when setting-up an account. Under new proposals to prevent online abuse, the government has suggested ID verification for users.

Emma argued “the desire to identify and hold to account racists, especially if they are hiding behind the anonymity of social media, is understandable, we need to think through the implications of ID verification very carefully”.

Emma said the use of ID verification raises privacy issues and could be subject to abuse.
