As a second lockdown puts UK welfare policy under the spotlight there is “an attraction to the simplicity of a UBI system” says Mark Littlewood, IEA Director-General, but there are reasons to be sceptical.
Writing his fortnightly column for The Times, Mark argues that a “reboot” of the welfare system following the pandemic would be unavoidable and probably welcome but that a new system would need to be “better at targeting funds and providing incentives” which a UBI is not.
