Andy Mayer, IEA Energy, Environment and Infrastructure Analyst, has commented in The Telegraph on the Labour Party’s call to introduce a North Sea windfall tax in an attempt to reduce household bills.
The proposal has been described as ‘opportunistic’ and is widely considered to be detrimental to an industry which pays far more in tax than many others.
Andy stated:
“The whole system needs a fundamental review with a reversion to a simpler system with fewer opt-outs, consistent taxation across the different types of energy provision, and a carbon tax to reflect the challenge of climate change”
