Mark Littlewood appointed Director General of the IEA

The Institute of Economic Affairs has appointed Mark Littlewood as its next Director General. Littlewood, 37, takes on the role from 1st December 2009.
Mark Littlewood said:
“This is an enormously exciting opportunity. But it is also an awesome responsibility. The IEA has made an incredible contribution to the understanding of the importance of free markets over the past five decades.
I am determined to ensure that the Institute builds on its rich history to ensure that the case for free markets is made loudly and clearly at this challenging time, when politicians of all parties show an alarming tendency to place trust in increasing regulation and statist solutions to cure many of society’s ills.
The need for the IEA has never been greater and I’m honoured to be given the chance to play such a key role in building on the Institute’s reputation, influence and history.”
Mark Littlewood has previously worked as the Head of Media for the Liberal Democrats (2004-2007), the Campaigns Director of human rights group Liberty (2001-2004) and was the co-founder and first chief executive of NO2ID, the campaign against the introduction of identity cards. Since 2007, he has been the Communications Director of the classical liberal think tank, Progressive Vision.
Professor D. R. Myddelton, the Chairman of the IEA Trustees, said:
“We are delighted that Mark Littlewood has agreed to join the IEA as our next Director General. He brings the experience and skills the Institute needs to continue to make the case for free markets clearly and energetically.”

Congratulations to Mark. He has been a strong advocate of free markets and free societies for as long as I have known him and I know that he will bring dedication and commitment to his work at the IEA.

Tom – IEA staff, authors and supporters hold a wide range of views on Europe. The recent IEA monograph, The European Institutions as an Interest Group, which was featured in the FT, argued for radical reform of the EU rather than its dissolution.

Mr. Littlewood was very rude and ill-informed on BBC today. He made not one valid point, rudely interrupted the other speaker and was clearly displaying how economic crises occur in the first place: people with money don’t listen, don’t care and do not want to understand the human ramifications of their decisions. Narrow minded and dim, he should not be let out on public television again until he has something useful to say.

Mr littlewood is never rude and to say he is ever ill-informed is redicuous. I will concede that he can come across as forceful when he is being interviewed, but i applaud his style. For too long this country has been run as a sort of quasi-socialist state, with more services run by the state then china at the height of the communist party. We need more people with Mr Littlewoods passion for free markets in the public domain. The country needs to have a long hard look in the mirror, and decide once and for all wether we are a free market functioning capitalist society, or a horribly accurate depiction of the world that Ayn Rand delivered with Atlas Shrugged in 1957.
