Last week’s budget marked the full return to “Butskellism” – “the broad cross-party consensus” on the size, function and operation of the public sector, which dominated British politics for decades in the postwar period and kept vast swathes of industry under the ownership and control of government, writes IEA Director General Mark Littlewood.

In his biweekly column for The Times, Mark argues that the current consensus over economic policy will not serve the country well and that our economic future will be “a very long way away from the buccaneering, risk-taking, dynamic Britain that the prime minister purports to believe in.”
