Writing for CapX ahead of the latest fiscal statement, Professor Len Shackleton, IEA Editorial and Research Fellow argued new government support schemes would probably be popular but largely ineffective.

Len argues: “the real challenge is to deregulate the labour and product markets on a sustainable basis to encourage job creation over the longer term, rather than short-term sticking-plaster schemes of this kind.”
