Fraud Focus: Is the Serious Fraud Office fit for purpose? a new paper by IEA Academic and Research Director James Forder has been featured in The Times.

The piece by Times Legal Editor Jonathan Ames said:

 

“The senior fraud-fighting agency is so riven by failure and ‘unprofessional behaviour’ that it may need to be abolished, according to a new report.

“Disbanding the Serious Fraud Office and reallocating its powers is potentially the only solution to the agency’s well-publicised problems, researchers at the Institute of Economic Affairs, the right-of-centre think tank, claim.

“They have laid out a charge sheet against the 36-year-old agency, arguing that it has been ‘responsible for a series of expensive and high-profile failed prosecutions, unlawful prosecutions and breaches of the civil service code’.”
