Mark argues that the Chancellor’s recent cost of living statement is proof of this trend and that populist cash-injections and taxes on unexpected profits are political strategies to distract from other issues impacting the party.
“One can only hope that the overall size of the cost-of-living support package was calculated through a strictly economic lens, but it’s hard to avoid the concern that there were more political considerations at play. Perhaps the mathematics were closer to being based on assuming that the necessary penance for the Sue Gray report was about £1.7bn for each of the nine photographs included in it.”
