Commenting on the Liberal Democrat’s manifesto, Mark Littlewood, Director General at the Institute of Economic Affairs, said:

“The coalition government has succeeded in reducing the overall budget deficit, but at a pitifully slow pace. Nick Clegg seems determined to maintain this tortuous trajectory.

“The government is still spending more than it’s bringing in at a rate of about £10 million every hour. Rather than identifying the tens of billions of savings needed to get state spending back into balance, Nick Clegg seems keen to portray the election as something out of the Wizard of Oz, with one leading character lacking a heart and another lacking a brain. Unfortunately, all the participants seem to lack the courage to admit government spending is far, far too high”
