Spending restraint necessary to tame Britain’s unsustainable fiscal policy


Matthew Lesh quoted in the BBC

IEA Head of Public Policy Matthew Lesh has been quoted in a BBC article questioning the view that spending cuts will not be necessary to fill the UK’s £50bn budget black hole.

 

Accepting that the extent of the shortfall is uncertain, Matthew nonetheless emphasised that the state is facing “lower-than-expected revenues and higher debt costs”.

 

Matthew argued that the solution was a reduction in government spending and, crucially, a credible plan for growth, which would increase long-term revenues.
