SNP Rent Controls
SUGGESTED
IEA research referenced in the Scottish Daily Express
The article said:
“The Institute for Economic Affairs (IEA) has published extensive research in its review of rent controls. This in-depth piece of research concludes that while rent control schemes have “well-intentioned goals”, most result in “unintended consequences,” like “stifling housing supply…and driving up rents.”
“SAL’s own research and our collective experience echoes what the IEA has found. Shortened supply, higher rents, and fewer properties available to the more and more families who need them is Scotland’s future if we proceed with the rent controls.
“It is not just the expert academics like the IEA or sector representatives like SAL who have raised concerns, there are voices from within Holyrood, like Scottish Labour MSP, Daniel Johnson, who believe the current proposals are “unsupportable.” Others, on other benches, agree but may not have said so publicly.
“Rent controls are not a new idea. They have been tried in other places, like New York, California, and Berlin, and have resulted in unintended consequences outweighing the benefits each time.”
