Guy Verhofstadt’s recent jab at Brexit voters is misleading

Julian Jessop, IEA Economics Fellow, has been quoted in The Express regarding Ex-Belgian Prime Minister, Guy Verhofstadt’s recent Tweet accusing Brexiteers of lying about the UK’s trading potential outside of the Single Market. Verhofstadt produced a table claiming that the UK’s trading flows had fallen behind other EU powers since 2006.

Julian took to Twitter to respond to Verhofstadt’s claims.

 “This chart shows the trade intensity of UK GDP levelled out around 2006, ie. 10 years before the EU ref, and while we were still in the SM!

“TBF, #Brexit has had a negative impact on UK trade (so far), but this isn’t a great way of showing that.”
