Responding to reports that Londoners may face higher taxes to pay for Transport for London’s funding shortfall, Dr Richard Wellings, Head of Transport at free market think tank the Institute of Economic Affairs, said:

“It is wrong to force taxpayers to subsidise public transport services that many of them never use. The Mayor of London should make up the funding shortfall through a combination of fare increases and spending cuts. Changing travel habits mean expensive new public transport infrastructure will no longer be needed, potentially saving tens of billions in the long term.”
