Len Shackleton quoted in the Express

IEA Editorial and Research Fellow Len Shackleton has been quoted in the Express commenting on civil servants’ work-from-home privileges and productivity concerns.

The article said:

Professor Len Shackleton of the Institute of Economic Affairs said there is ‘little sound evidence’ that productivity is boosted by working from home. He said civil servants should not be able to base themselves at home if their bosses want them in the building.

He said: ‘Civil servants have been a particularly privileged group of workers for a long time, with more job security, higher pay and bumper pensions. To further enhance their position by allowing them to work at home when their bosses would prefer them in the office is a step too far.

Many workers – in manufacturing, retail, transport, personal services, teaching, entertainment and so forth – will never have this option. If we do end up caving in to the civil service unions on this issue, their pay and perks – especially their London allowances – should be cut to offset the decline in productivity which this is likely to entail.”
