In advance of David Willetts’ speech today, Mark Littlewood, Director General of the Institute of Economic Affairs, said:

“David Willetts is absolutely right to point to the need for greater flexibility for universities to innovate and engage with students through new models. However, at the heart of any reform must be the removal of the current limits on university tuition fees. Students are the principal beneficiaries of higher education, so they should be the ones picking up the bill.”

“Universities must have the freedom to work out for themselves how best to provide education and at what cost. Without a radical reform of university funding which gives greater freedom to universities there will be little innovation and the quality of tertiary education will continue to suffer.”
