The IEA respond to David Cameron's Conservative Party Conference speech

Commenting on David Cameron’s speech to Conservative Party Conference, Mark Littlewood, Director General at the Institute of Economic Affairs, said:

“Today the Prime Minister gave an aspirational and assured speech, but it is a shame that it was light on policy.

“Now is the time for the government to double down on their aims to eliminate the deficit and live within its means. That means following through on the government’s plan to reduce spending and not raise taxes.

“On housing, whilst David Cameron’s intentions are well meaning, his actions need to go much further. The exorbitant cost of housing in the UK is a direct result of government regulation. Until we see meaningful liberalisation of planning laws, Britons will continue to face high rents and a diminishing chance of getting on the housing ladder.”
