At a time when public opinion in Britain looks more left-wing than it has done for some time – with 36% of people in a recent YouGov survey expressing a favourable view of socialism, versus 33% sharing a favourable view of capitalism – the IEA released a new film, discussing socialism, and the many intellectuals’ continued attachment to it.
Featuring our Head of Health and Welfare Dr Kristian Niemietz and Digital Officer Madeline Grant, the film asks why so many on the left passionately defend socialism – despite overwhelming historical evidence that the ideology has never worked anywhere it has been tried.
It also examines the concept of ‘democratic socialism’, much feted by advocates of the ideology – and questions whether democracy could ever be compatible with governments in which every aspect of public life is centrally planned.
