Live from Lord North Street – An Alternative View of History

We’re joined by the Institute of Economic Affairs’s Head of Education Dr Steve Davies to discuss: An Alternative View of History – What you didn’t learn in history class.

Hosted by the IEA’s Digital Officer Madeline Grant, Steve begins by arguing that the way history is taught is deeply flawed. He highlights different historical dates that have arguably shaped history more – such as the development of shipping containers and birth control – than the famous dates that most people recognise.

Steve continues by discussing why historically important moments are cherry-picked for teaching – arguing that we put too much emphasis on politics and power, rather than trade, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Steve concludes by discussing the ‘Great Man Theory’ – what counts (and what should count) as a great man or woman historically.
