The IEA Book Club is delighted to be hosting Professor Tim Congdon (Chairman, Institute of International Monetary Research) to discuss his latest book The Quantity Theory of Money: A New Restatement. This event will be taking place on Tuesday 10th September from 17:30 – 19:30 at the IEA (2 Lord North Street, Westminster, London, SW1P 3LB), chaired by Tom Clougherty (IEA Executive Director).

During the Covid-19 pandemic, it was widely believed that inflation would decrease and prices might even decline. However, Tim was one of the few economists who foresaw the inflationary threat as early as June 2020 (click here to read his IEA COVID-19 Briefing on inflation)

In his new book, The Quantity Theory of Money: A New Restatement, Tim argues that many economists misunderstood the causes of inflation by neglecting a crucial factor: the quantity of money circulating in the economy.

This book underscores the urgency for policymakers to reassess monetary policy to avoid repeating past errors.

Tim Congdon is one of the world’s leading monetary analysts. He advised the UK’s 1979-97 Conservative government on economic policy, serving as a member of the Treasury Panel (the so-called ‘Wise Men’ ) from 1992 to 1997. He is usually regarded as the UK’s leading exponent of the ‘monetarist’ school of thought, and was influential in the late 1970s and early 1980s in the defence of ‘Thatcherite monetarism’.
