Response to the ECJ rejection of minimum pricing for alcohol

Commenting on the ECJ’s decision that minimum pricing of alcohol is contrary to EU law, Christopher Snowdon, Head of Lifestyle Economics at the Institute of Economic Affairs, said:

“This ruling is an early Christmas present for millions of drinkers. Minimum pricing would have clobbered low and middle income drinkers for no good reason. It is a shame the SNP ignored repeated warnings that this sort of price fixing breaches EU law but now that the European Court of Justice has spoken, let us hear no more about it. Goodbye and good riddance to minimum pricing.”
