Commenting on proceedings at the World Economic Forum taking place in Davos, Matthew Lesh, Head of Public Policy at free market think tank the Institute of Economic Affairs, said:

“Davos is the global elite at its absolute worst: vacuous and condescending.

“Davos-style collusion between big government and big business is frightening. It means lobbying for cumbersome regulations that hurt smaller businesses, put up barriers to competition, and harm consumers with higher prices.

“They talk about inequality and higher taxes, while largely ignoring the great strides that have been achieved in liberating billions from poverty through free trade and enterprise. At the same time, they diminish the importance of profit-seeking enterprises, that provide jobs and useful products, in favour of ill-defined societal goals.

“It’s welcome that turnout is reportedly down this year. The global economy is shaped by the decisions of billions of individuals and millions of business — not the Davos elite.”
