Vernon Lomax Smith is an American economist primarily recognised for his work in behavioural and experimental economics. He is the founder and president of the International Foundation for Research in Experimental Economics, a Member of the Board of Advisors for The Independent Institute, and a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute. He received his Ph.D. at Harvard and later taught at schools such as Stanford and the University of Massachusetts. He received the Nobel prize in 2002 “for having established laboratory experiments as a tool in empirical economic analysis, especially in the study of alternative market mechanisms.”
