IEA Head of Media Emily Carver has written an op-ed for CapX arguing that anti-gambling campaigners have gone too far in their recent calls to ban betting adverts, slow down play and introduce monthly caps on bets. These proposals will feed into the Government’s review into British gambling law.

Citing new IEA research on gambling reform, Emily argued that the anti-gambling brigade are “at odds both with enjoyment and personal responsibility”. Instead, we should use technology to detect gambling addicts and, in so doing, prevent harm. This can be done by ‘Big Data’ which allows companies to identify problem gamblers in a way that was never possible before, with algorithms. This would end the need for sweeping paternalistic anti-gambling laws.
