Extending the furlough scheme would “hinder London’s recovery, not help it”

In an article for City AM, IEA Editorial and Research Fellow Prof. Len Shackleton argued that extending the furlough scheme beyond October would do more harm than good.

While it was initially necessary and met the needs of the hour, the longer workers remain furloughed, the “less likely it is that their jobs will be there to return to, as more and more companies become zombie businesses, with markets lost as demand and supply conditions inexorably shift.”
