Tax snooping fears could cause mistrust over coronavirus app

As some accountants report tax snooping fears could limit peoples’ willingness to download the coronavirus tracking app, Victoria Hewson, Head of Regulatory Affairs at the Institute of Economic Affairs, warns trust in the app is key.

She told the Daily Telegraph that while the app’s terms say the data will only be used to fight Covid-19, “we know for example security services will sometimes claim overriding powers to access data, or that government systems sometimes have technical and security problems.”

She added “tax data is shared with the Home Office for processing immigration applications, so we know a lot of data sharing within Government goes on.”
