The Legendary Arthur
The IEA this week marked the centenary of one our founding fathers, the late Arthur Seldon.
Arthur was Editorial Director of the IEA for over 30 years and was a true visionary. As early as 1980, he predicted that China would choose capitalism, that the Soviet Union would fall and that Labour would become a spent force.
And he played a vital role in shaping the economic policies of Margaret Thatcher’s government.
A packed event at the IEA heard tributes from his son Peter Seldon, economist Professor Patrick Minford, Arthur’s former assistant (and successor as editor of the journal Economic Affairs) Martin Anderson, IEA trustee Linda Whetstone and our Acting Academic and Research Director, Dr. Richard Wellings.
Members of the audience also added their recollections and appreciation of a man who helped change the climate of opinion in the UK – and whose impact cannot be underestimated.
