A new research paper estimates that critics reviews benefited West End theatre by £19m in 2003 but that the impact of The Evening Standard was negative by nearly £2m.
A paper published today by the IEA breaks new ground by quantifying the financial impact of theatre critics on the West End. The author, Ian Senior, analyses in detail the critiques that appeared in 19 papers of 32 West End productions launched in 2003. He estimates that taken together their effect was positive on the West End’s box-office by £19m.
This is equivalent to about six per cent of the total box-office takings.
A table ranking the contributions of all 19 titles puts The Daily Telegraph and The Times at the top of the list with a positive impact of about £4m each. Bottom of the table is The Evening Standard with a negative contribution of £1.9m.
