Rather than blindly sending cheques (which conveniently absolve us of any responsibility to actually address difficult issues such as the undermining of democracy in certain parts of the world), the UK government should consider following in the footsteps of fellow nations. We should cut our foreign aid budget, and look to offer genuine aid to these countries through a rollback of protectionism and a focus on free trade.
