The government has come under increasing pressure to ban imports of Russian coal as part of sanctions on Russian energy.

Commenting on the proposals in the Daily Express, IEA Energy Analyst Andy Mayer welcomed calls to mine British coal, which is subject to more rigorous environmental standards. He urged eco activists and others to support the opening of a new UK coal mine at Whitehaven.

Andy argued: “The UK steel industry needs coking coal. It either imports it, and risks funding Russian tanks, or uses domestic sources subject to the UK’s higher environmental standards“.
