In the interview Jamie argues that the problem with protectionist and ‘Buy British’ policies is that they work by driving up the costs of things. So things that could be done more cheaply by overseas firms, are instead done in the UK more expensively and that’s a policy that benefits a few at the expense of the many. The fact that other countries do something means that they have very bad economic policy, not that we should follow in their steps.
These kinds of policies direct money towards special interest groups at the expense of the general population.
