If you focus on the differences in the lives of the rich and the poor, you are going to find some startling variations. But we are approaching the issue by looking down the wrong end of the telescope, and are in danger of asking the wrong questions. How much should we really care about the gap between the affluent and hard up as opposed to the absolute position of the impoverished in society? And would we be content to see growing inequality as long as we were witnessing real improvements in the lives of the poorest?
