Mark argues that far from being a Wild West, out-of-control, shoddy sector, private building inspectors have tended to produce impressive outcomes. They carry out about 120,000 checks every year and generate a complaints rate of only 0.3 per cent, the lowest in the building control industry. Removing them from the field of play not only will drastically reduce the speed of inspections but also will place greater strain on council budgets.
