In trivial terms it follows that, if you spend more on healthcare, you will get more of it. Yet those at the top of life expectancy charts (Italy, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Finland, and Ireland) currently spend less than the UK on healthcare as a percentage of GDP. So the real question is not how much we are spending, but, how are European systems spending less, more effectively?
Our European counterparts are far more effective at tackling treatable causes of mortality, saving thousands of lives. It is all well and good to unfurl blanket attacks on the current levels of spending, but that is not going to address healthcare inequality. Despite having the most statist, egalitarian healthcare system in Europe, it is better to be a poorer person in the Netherlands or Germany.
