The goal of public policy should not be to get some equal split between men and women doing the exact same thing, it should be to give partners the freedom to choose what is right for them in their own home. It should be a free choice. Increasing paternity pay is a good move because small businesses won’t be terribly affected by that – they can reclaim most, if not all of it back from government. Of course it’s a cost to the taxpayer, but that is a question of prioritisation. What is much more concerning is required dad leave. This is the government saying if you don’t make the decision about how you run things in your home, we’re going to come in and threaten your benefits, to threaten your time off.
