Kate Andrews appears on BBC Radio 5 Live
In the interview Kate argues that the actual pay gap is not at 18 per cent but at 9.4 per cent according to the ONS. The legislation today completely ignores that women between the ages of 22-39 are earning an equal amount compared to their male counterparts. The problem is that women take time out of work to have families – that is where the differential lies and we have a motherhood pay gap. This legislation does nothing to show whether or not men and women are being paid differently for doing the same job because it doesn’t compare jobs like for like – it looks at the mean and median of men and women’s salaries throughout the entire company.
