Europe needs growth to support own security

Responding to Trump’s pause on aid to Ukraine, Adam Bartha, Director of International Outreach at the Institute of Economic Affairs, and EPICENTER said:

“Trump’s first weeks of his second term have proved that Europe needs to be able to support its own security with or without the United States. But sustainable hard power requires economic growth and competitiveness. Security is not cheap, but it also cannot be guaranteed by others.

“Over the last 20 years, European nations been way too preoccupied with themselves, regulating every aspect of their economy an as a result, massively falling behind the United States.

“But we cannot afford the luxury of overregulation anymore. In order to get us growing, we need to cut regulations that stifle growth, rethink our energy policy so it can fuel the economy, and embrace free trade with the rest of the world to increase our prosperity.”
