Writing in Spiked!, Emma highlights the example of McDonalds who responded to public opinion on single-use plastics by replacing the 1/8 million straws used in their restaurants daily with paper alternatives, only to later admit it had replaced 100% recyclable straws with ones which could not be recycled and instead were being incinerated.
Emma writes that we need to have an honest conversation about the “effect certain materials have on the environment” and the benefits of plastics, as well as the negative impact.
