About the Role
We are seeking a Communications Officer to join the Communications Department to help take the reach of IEA’s ideas and work to new heights.
This is a fast-paced, outward-facing role at the heart of the organisation. You will be responsible for amplifying the IEA’s research and commentary across traditional media, digital and social platforms, and among key political and policy stakeholders. You will also play a leading role in delivering public events and managing the day-to-day operation of the IEA press office.

The role is ideal for someone with superb initiative, strong news judgement, excellent written communication skills, and an interest in classical liberal ideas about economics, politics, and public policy.

Key Responsibilities:
Media and Press
- Manage the IEA press office, including handling reactive media enquiries and building and maintaining relationships with journalists.
- Secure coverage for IEA research and spokespeople across national print, broadcast, and online media.
- Draft press releases, media pitches, briefings, and reactive commentary.
- Coordinate and manage the media output of IEA spokespeople, including interviews, op-eds, and broadcast appearances.
Digital and Social Media
- Support and contribute to the IEA’s digital output across social media platforms.
- Help develop content for the IEA’s sector-leading YouTube and Substack channels, including blogs, videos, clips, and promotional material.
- Ensure research outputs are presented in accessible, engaging formats for online audiences.
Public Affairs
- Help ensure IEA arguments reach key parliamentarians, advisers, and Westminster stakeholders.
- Support communications activity around parliamentary briefings, events, and policy moments.
Events
- Lead on the production and promotion of public events, including lectures, panels, and launches.
- Coordinate logistics, speakers, media engagement, and follow-up communications.
General
- Monitor news and policy developments to identify opportunities for timely intervention.
- Work closely with researchers and senior staff to translate complex ideas into compelling communications.
This is envisaged as a full-time, employed position based at our office starting as soon as possible. There is scope for development and expanded responsibilities for candidates who are interested, though this is not required.
Salary ranges between £25,000 and £32,000, depending on experience and skills. The IEA provides exceptional benefits including 25 paid days’ leave per annum, a personal pension matching up to 5% of salary, private medical insurance, critical illness and death-in-service coverage, Employee Assistance Programme, and flexible working hours.
