Ryan Bourne features in The Independent on Sunday
In the article, Ryan suggests five ways to make improvements to the BBC, making the point that the BBC faces similar challenges to those facing radio on the invention of television and that around 90 per cent of its output is indistinguishable from that of its commercial rivals. Ryan suggests that it would be beneficial to abolish the licence fee and privatise the BBC. Raising funds for itself would make the corporation more accountable to viewers and enable it to specialise in what it does best.
Ryan adds that, owing to its method of funding and privileged position, the BBC can affect public opinion, with a huge news market share. If the BBC became a commercial entity, it would not be prone to accusations of bias.
