Farewell, Public Health England

In this video the IEA’s Director General Mark Littlewood, IEA Director General, is joined by Christopher Snowdon, the IEA’s Head of Lifestyle Economics. Mark gets Chris’ reaction to the announcement this week by Health Secretary Matt Hancock that Public Health England is to be scrapped and replaced by a National Institute for Health Protection.

PHE has been a thorn in Chris’ side since it was set up back in 2013 – prioritising nanny state interventions and lectures about obesity over preparing for genuine public health crises like say a pandemic. But should we be popping the champagne corks?
