Development Manager

The Institute of Economic Affairs, the UK’s original free market think tank, is seeking to expand its fundraising team.The new hires will include a Development Director and two support staff.

Exact job roles, titles and salaries will be determined according to the skills and experience.  The descriptions below represent the range of duties that may be asked of the successful candidates.

Development Director: Responsibilities include:

  • Drafting and implementing fundraising strategy

  • Day to day management of the fundraising team

  • Establishing, maintaining and furthering relationships with donors

  • Identifying and building new donor relationships

  • Identifying and targeting charitable foundations

  • Creating fundraising proposals

  • Developing outputs and reports for the management team, trustees and Advisory Council

  • Forecasting and monitoring budgets


Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Essential

  • Demonstrable success in securing and maintaining high level donations and grants

  • Proven ability to deliver fundraising targets

  • The ability to identify and implement innovative development strategies

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • A track record of motivating and managing dedicated teams

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Organisational skills, energy and enthusiasm

  • Willingness to work long and sometimes unsocial hours


Desirable

  • A track record of fundraising work for a think tank, pressure group, charity or similar organisation

  • A keen awareness of the fundraising landscape, both in the UK and beyond

  • Thorough knowledge of fundraising best practice

  • A clear understanding of free-market ideas and arguments


In the first instance, we’ll be looking to fill the Development Director role.  But we’re also keen to fill these newly-created positions:

Development Manager:  Responsibilities include:

  • Creating annual plans for donor engagement

  • Writing regular donor updates/letters/emails

  • Preparing applications to foundations and trusts

  • Scheduling a programme of update calls and reports

  • Developing and implementing new fundraising strategies

  • Developing and implementing legacy strategies

  • Planning and managing donor events

  • Identifying, maintaining and developing sponsorship deals


Development Officer: This support role includes:

  • Providing research and support for the development team

  • Updating and utilising the IEA’s fundraising database

  • Drafting donor letters and reports

  • Overseeing mail outs and managing invitations to donor events

  • Arranging meetings, liaising with partners and supporters

Compensation

Salary will be commensurate with experience.  The IEA provides exceptional benefits to all employees, including 25 days’ paid leave per annum, a personal pension which matches up to 5% of salary, private medical insurance, critical illness and death in service coverage and flexible working hours
