There is life in the high street yet

Coronavirus will not necessarily contribute to the downfall of the high street and the picture is more complex, says Annabel Denham, Director of Communications at the Institute of Economic Affairs.

Writing for CapX, Annabel notes that a mixture of factors contribute to high street decline – including transport links, housing, availability of local jobs – and the pandemic may force some businesses to be more innovative in attracting customers now footfall has gone.

Annabel also argues that fact many retailers and restaurants have moved online, possibly for the first time or temporarily, shows the folly of a digital sales tax as a way to protect the high street.
